IIHF meets Hype Hockey and share future development plan for 3x3

The landscape of international hockey is undergoing a rapid transformation, and the Baltic region has become a vital testing ground for its future.

Since 2023, HypeHockey.com has been at the forefront of this movement, perfecting the high-speed 3x3 format.  Following a landmark tournament in July 2025—which combined elite athletic performance with a sold-out, electric atmosphere—the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) took a keen interest in the organization's success.

The relentless efforts of the Hype Hockey organizers to pioneer the 3x3 format reached a major milestone in December 2025. Recognizing the high standards set in the Baltics, IIHF representatives Florian Mayer and Christian Mueller (Ulitmate Hockey) traveled to Riga for a strategic meeting. Their goal was to exchange insights and draw upon our operational expertise to help shape the global framework for this burgeoning discipline

Harvesting Baltic Expertise

One of objective for Mayer and Mueller was to understand the "secret sauce" behind Hype Hockey’s rapid growth. Since its inception in 2023, the organization has managed to turn 3x3 hockey from a niche experiment into a commercial and sporting powerhouse in the Baltics.

Operational Insights: The IIHF representatives were particularly interested in Hype Hockey’s experience regarding game flow, specialized officiating for 3x3, and the logistics of hosting high-intensity, short-format tournaments. Fan Engagement: Following the full-capacity success of the July 2025 event, the discussion delved into how Hype Hockey successfully marketed the format to reach new audiences and maintain high-energy "game day" experiences.
The Vision: "Breaking the Ice"

During the meeting, Mayer and Mueller reciprocated by sharing the IIHF’s long-term roadmap. They detailed their vision for making 3x3 a cornerstone of international competition, designed to attract a younger, digital-native demographic.

The highlight of their presentation was the introduction of the "Breaking the Ice" league. This upcoming IIHF initiative aims to create a professional, standardized global circuit. By consulting with Hype Hockey, the IIHF aims to integrate proven regional success stories into the foundation of this new league.

A Collaborative Future

This meeting marks a significant bridge between grassroots innovation and international governance. For Hype Hockey, it is a prestigious validation of three years of hard work and vision. For the IIHF, it is an opportunity to learn from a team that has already proven the 3x3 format can thrive with "full house" results.

As the "Breaking the Ice" league moves from concept to reality, the collaboration established between Hype Hockey and the IIHF’s Mayer and Mueller ensures that the lessons learned in the Baltic rinks will influence the global stage. Stay tuned to hypehockey.com as we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible on the ice.
